Kindergarten

Kindergarten (Pre-K, K1, K2)

The Kindergarten/Preschool program at GVIS is designed for children between the ages of 3 to 6. We aim to provide our students with the opportunity to develop self-awareness, teamwork skills, and grow to be lifelong learners and caring citizens. At GVIS, Kindergarten consists of Pre-Kindergarten (PK), Junior Kindergarten (JK), and Senior Kindergarten (SK).

In pre-school, we emphasize the process rather than the product. We seek to create a love for learning rather than merely covering topics in a syllabus. Such engagement, which is led by the little learners themselves in learning centres, and facilitated by the teachers, brings a wonderful outcome: the children begin to come up with ideas and engage in critical problem-solving processes in a variety of contexts, both curricular and social. And these are learning skills that will stay with them for life.

The environment at GVIS is joyful, purposeful, and engaging to help each child be a successful learner. The international Kindergarten/Preschool program at GVIS focuses on various learning milestones that students need to meet. The Kindergarten program focuses on areas of development like Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Communication, Language and Literacy; Mathematical Development; Understanding and Knowledge of the world; Physical Development and Creative Development. These six areas form a foundation for the subject areas in grades 1 and above. Learning involves various strategies through whole group instruction, small group learning, as well as independent activities. Through these methods, students learn about being a part of a class community, as well as explore their own individual learning style through a structured environment. We fully encourage and prepare children for life by placing learning in a meaningful context.

Classes start at 8:20 am and end at either 3:50 pm (Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays) or 2:50 pm (Thursday & Friday). Classes last approximately 45minutes each with two 15-minute recess/snack breaks and a 40-minute lunch break

The elementary school program focuses on providing an engaging learning environment nurturing a student’s academic success, as well as their social, emotional, and physical growth. Students are also given skills and experiential learning opportunities that allow for deeper contextual knowledge, which taps into their curiosity, leading them to become life- long learners.

Through the framework of concept, competency, and character – the Elementary School program focuses on the following subject areas. The subject learning objectives are derived from the Cambridge Primary Program and are integrated through thematic inquiry based units – making the concepts more meaningful and relatable.
